Today I’m struggling with a title. I’ve read that Hemmingway went through hundreds of possible titles for each book. I’ve only been through 100 or so, but every one of them reeks of inadequacy. I need a title that compels people to read my story–they must be incapable of resisting once my title has seized them. The title must evoke a sense of the story, but it mustn’t be too obvious. Hopefully the title’s meaning and relevance will be gracefully revealed to the reader and then completely realized as he finishes the story. Ideally, the title’s beauty will cause people to weep.
To give you a sense of how close I am to the ideal title, my best candidate so far is, “Santa Claus is My Bitch”.
All right, back to work.
